Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign is one of the most innovative and successful examples of nonprofit achievement. They recently won the Blackbaud Impact Award for their 2014 #SaveSummer campaign, which included a text message program to help connect families with free summer meals.
A multi-channel campaign to end childhood hunger
As part of their mission to end childhood hunger in America, No Kid Hungry launched the 2014 #SaveSummer campaign to engage their supporters across the country. Using a multi-channel approach and creative tactics, No Kid Hungry was able to raise over $100,000 through email and direct mail. Throughout the summer, they also used social media and online landing pages to continually promote their summer meals texting program.
How the texting program worked
No Kid Hungry used text messaging to offer families a convenient way to locate free summer meals sites close to them. They promoted the program over social media and on flyers, which were distributed to students at the end of the school year.
Stand Up For Summer texting day
To kick off the texting program, No Kid Hungry hosted a national Stand Up For Summer texting day on June 3rd, 2014. Celebrities and influencers helped promote the program over social media and reached over 19 million people with the message!
Nearly 50,000 families texted to find a summer meals site in 2014
The 2014 texting program was extremely successful, with more than twice as many people texting in to find a summer meals site compared to the previous summer.
No Kid Hungry was able to connect free summer meals to millions of hungry children across America, thanks to the text messaging program. We are extremely proud of No Kid Hungry’s success and award, and we look forward to their future campaigns! To read more about the whole campaign, visit their campaign website here.
