The immigrant youth organization United We Dream recently used SMS to amplify the voices of three of its members into a rallying cry for thousands. Carlos, Evelyn, and Renata have been separated from their deported mothers; earlier this year, as part of #OperationButterfly, United We Dream reunited them for a tearful hug through the fence at the US-Mexico border.
United We Dream was able to transform this personal moment into a political rallying cry. Carlos, Evelyn, and Renata traveled to Washington, DC to meet with legislators and show politicians the human face of our immigration laws. During their trip, United We Dream used SMS to mobilize their supporters to call their legislators. A powerful human moment became an outpouring of support from across the country. According to their website:What happens at the border doesn’t stay at the border. We are taking #OperationButterfly to DC. Evelyn, Renata, and Carlos will be visiting senators and congress(wo)men this week. To have maximum impact, we are asking YOU to call their offices while #OperationButterfly is there! Just sign up here to receive a reminder SMS alert to call while we are there. You will get an SMS alert throughout the day on Thursday, June 20, 2013.
How It Worked
Supporters learned about #OperationButterfly from Facebook and Twitter, then texted BUTTERFLY to 877877 to sign up.
When United We Dream wanted to mobilize their new base, they sent out a text message to their mobile list, which encouraged them to flood politicians’ offices with phone calls supporting more humane immigration policies. The influx of calls supporting the teens’ cause sent a clear message to the politicians who control the future of US immigration.
Even though #OperationButterfly is over, supporters can still text UWD to 877877. You’ll be alerted the next time United We Dream needs you to add your voice to their cause.
How United We Dream’s Example Can Help Your Organization
Every organization has a human face, but sometimes that isn’t enough. Putting thousands or tens of thousands of phone calls behind that face—showing how much support your cause truly has—can make the difference between a flash-in-the-pan stunt and a powerful message that creates lasting change.
It’s easy to start to build your mobile list. Simply spread a text call to action through your existing Facebook, Twitter, and website. United We Dream even put their text call to action in their Twitter bio!
Then, when you need to get yourself noticed, you can send a message to your group’s supporters, mobilizing them.
