Do you have a great idea for a mobile campaign? Are you thinking of expanding your existing outreach? The Knight Foundation is distributing $5 million in funding to breakthrough ideas that “harness mobile technology to inform and engage communities.” In addition to financial aid, the grants will give their winners access to Knight’s network of advisors and industry leaders.  So if you’ve got a great concept for crowd-sourcing local news-gathering over SMS – or you want to develop a text message alert system to keep your constituents informed – you should apply now to submit your idea. The deadline is next Monday, September 10th.

The Mobile grant is the third in a series as part of the Knight News Challenge. Prior grants awarded innovations in Networks and in Data. According to the Foundation’s press release,

The Knight News Challenge accelerates media innovation by funding the best breakthrough ideas in news and information. Innovators from all industries and countries – for-profit and non-profit – are invited to participate. The challenge’s definition of news is broad, encompassing any mobile idea that helps provide communities with the information they need

We want to encourage all of our eligible customers to apply. If you’ve been thinking about a mobile initiative that can help inform your community, the Knight grants could give you the resources to realize your project.

To apply, Knight asks that you answer 8 straightforward questions, such as what the project is, who will use it, and what kind of resources you need to complete it.
