Greenpeace ships are made for hard work. The environmental advocacy organization is famous for confronting illegal whalers right on the high seas. But last week, one Greenpeace vessel served a friendlier function: promoting SMS advocacy.

The Rainbow Warrior III was docked in New York harbor, and Greenpeace invited passersby to tour the ship for a flavor of the organization’s important activist mission. They also were promoting their toxics campaign, a national effort to remove toxic chemicals from being used in industrial plants nationwide.

While giving the tour, a Greenpeace organizer spoke to the group about Greenpeace’s mission and asked visitors to text RAINBOW WARRIOR to 877877 to sign a petition against the toxic chemicals. The ship tour is promoting local action around whichever port the ship is in, so while in New York, Greenpeace was focused on Kuehne Chemical Co., Inc. of South Kearney, NJ. Greenpeace cites the plant for “failure to prevent catastrophic risks.” A disaster at the facility would put 12 million people at risk in the New York-New Jersey area. Greenpeace is asking the company to use safer alternatives to the toxics they currently use.

To sign the petition, text RAINBOW WARRIOR to 877877.
