The Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice is embroiled in a battle against Alabama’s HB 56 law – which a recent article from Worker’s World called “the harshest of the various state anti-immigrant laws.”  The article goes on to explain,

Among its 30 provisions, the bill makes it a crime to give a ride or provide shelter to undocumented immigrants; prohibits many documented immigrants from attending any public college or university in the state; and requires public school officials to ask children about the legal status of their parents.

Public outcry against the law, which has been in effect since September 1, has been enormous, with rallies, protests and petitions seeking both to repeal the law and to end the ways it’s abused to deny rights to immigrants. The ACIJ has been at the forefront of the fight, organizing a wide variety of events and actions.

They’ve also created a mobile campaign to get their message out. Texting “Unity” to 69866 returns a prompt asking users to reply with their zip code; they’re then signed up to receive updates about action they can take in their area. The confirmation text also asks them to forward the message on to five friends – so the movement keeps growing, from cell phone to cell phone.

Text UNITY to 69866 and join the campaign now!
